Users Stopping Weight-Loss Jabs Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Than Dieters

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study reveals that patients who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a prominent health publication points out that while obese individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People purchasing such medications need to be informed of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery means a reversion to original weight within about 18 months.

Weighing Treatments

The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

The team point out that people who shed pounds through dieting usually see a less rapid creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Fast Regain

Experts believe the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened weight return.

These medications copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Withdrawal of this medication results in hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Condition?

Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals argue that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy might need to be life-long.

This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Testimonies

People who have come off the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if a switch that goes on and you become extremely hungry," said an individual.

This difficulty is worsened if users have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Widespread Interest

Recent estimates indicate that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is higher among women compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts emphasize that while the jabs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits hinges on combined lifestyle management.
