Larian Studios Announce a Latest Divinity, Calling it Their Biggest RPG to Date

The buzz around The Game Awards reached a fever pitch, especially after host Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling image of a strange statue. The secret has now been solved. Larian Studios is developing a completely new Divinity game.

Announced as Divinity, the game was presented with a daring trailer packed with striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the very opening of infernal gates.

Not the Expected Sequel

For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian clarified that a direct sequel to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not currently in development.

Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a evolution of the core franchise. This phrasing suggests that the team could be crafting a real-time experience rather than another turn-based title. Currently, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is highly rated and many say it kicked off the modern wave of complex computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for intricate stories, choice-driven narratives, and complex character building—elements that subsequently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is traditional swords and sorcery, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency bestowed upon the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is brimming with unique possibilities only possible if you're playing as a distinct build with a unique decision path.

The series is also famously open-ended, allowing players to experiment in narrative and gameplay. Nearly every quest can be completed in multiple ways, often in lateral fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you recalled something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by using the world itself in a clever way.

A New Chapter Begins

It is these creative systems that allow people to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games of all time. Now, the RPG community can get ready for another adventure in this esteemed franchise.
