Comeback Medvedev Claims Maiden Title in Over Two Years

Nineteen of the Russian's twenty-one championships have been achieved on hard surfaces

A comeback Daniil Medvedev won his maiden title for 882 days with success over Frenchman Moutet in the Almaty Open final.

Medvedev, a former top-ranked player, has experienced a difficult period, achieving just one win at the Grand Slams and suffering a meltdown at the US Open.

The player's inconsistency on the ATP Tour - and issues with his serving in especial - caused him exiting of the top ten and eventually parting ways with long-term trainer Gilles Cervara.

Now working with his coach and Rohan Goetzke, he has steadily advanced in the recent weeks - culminating in a closely contested 7-5 4-6 6-3 triumph over opponent Moutet.

This represents Medvedev's maiden title since the Rome competition and first on a hard surface from spring of the previous year.

Success also means he has won 21 titles at twenty-one distinct competitions.

"This marks the first occasion I'm at a tournament with my both daughters simultaneously, so to get a trophy is especially meaningful," said world number 14 the champion.

"This victory is in tribute of my second daughter my daughter, because the initial championship I got when my child Alisa was born was for her."

The athlete, the former major winner, had been defeated in his past six title deciders, featuring in that event in the past months.

His defensive approach and recurring emotional displays on court had caused commentators to question if his ability to perform at the highest level was concluded.

But the player has made changes in the last few weeks, attempting to approach the net and play positively, backed up by an enhanced serving game.

He recovered from a disadvantage in the first set against the difficult opponent, taking 4 of the last five points to take the lead.

Both players traded service breaks in the following set before Moutet, attempting for his first professional victory, gained dominance to push for a decider.

Moutet defended 4 early-game chances in a close final set before Medvedev secured a break to fifteen to serve for the match.

Fittingly, the winner secured the title with a point at the front of the court, with his opponent unable to handle a return after two hours and 38 minutes.
