Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for hours when numerous of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a method that is highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and participants so that this activity become unprofitable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the region.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
